What exactly is “creativity”?
“Creativity is defined as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves and others.” Human Motivations, 3rd ed., by Robert E. Franken.
Anyone can plonk furniture into a room, throw up some artwork and call it “staged”. However, what has set me apart from being just a good home stager to a great home stager? Creativity!
The whole idea of staging a home is to communicate to the home buyer, through visuals, how this is the home for them. How do you grab a buyer’s attention when they’ve already looked at numerous properties that day? How do you stand out among all the other homes with granite counters, stainless steel appliances and hardwood floors?
The answer is simple, really – through creativity. Create a corner, a vignette, a niche, a desktop with something that transcends their senses, or that takes them back in time, or lets them dream of a new, ideal life for them and their family. It could be one item, a grouping, a particular accent color, or something special and unexpected and yet familiar all at the same time.
Creativity solves problems. Would these living room chairs look better and fit better in the den? Why don’t we hang this beautiful piece of art, that’s been hidden in the spare bedroom, over the fireplace in the living room where it creates maximum impact? Let’s rearrange these accessories to better showcase the shelves in the office.
At the end of the day, we are in the business of getting homes for sale, sold! Having creativity in our toolbox is paramount to getting the job done. Either you’ve got it or you don’t.
