How I Transformed a Closet Into a Prayer Room

I have always loved to pray, but lately I have been distracted by my life.  I needed a place where I could be alone in privacy to spend quality time and have focused prayers.

On my journey to getting my prayer life back on track, I took advantage of being close to the water to go for long prayer walks in nature, but I didn’t always have the time to go.

So I remembered the movie “War Room” and I thought I could devote one closet in my home to use as a prayer room. If you don’t pray, this could also be a room dedicated to meditation or just quiet times!

How I set up my prayer closet

1. SPACE

I considered if there was an actual extra little closet or space in my house where I could comfortably sit and kneel to pray. I settled for the closet in my basement that I currently use to store my material samples and rolls of fabric. I emptied the closet and went through my samples, making sure to give away anything I wasn’t using or anything that was discontinued. I found space in another area of my home for my fabric.

If you are trying to do this at home but don’t have a little space like this, try to be creative with an alternative– is there a space on the floor of your bedroom (not on your bed!) where you could be alone, leave a Bible and prayer photo album, and place some cushions or a mat?

2. LIGHTING

I was lucky to already have a light source in this closet, but if you don’t have one, add a small table lamp.

3. FURNITURE

Since my closet is a decent size, I was able to add an accent chair that I had in my staging storage, but throw pillows and a rug easily do the trick and make it more comfortable.

4. AMBIENCE

In terms of atmosphere, I used items I already had on hand. The “wallpaper” is not actual wallpaper! It used to be part of a window display at H&M that I got from the staff. I thought it would look good on the walls. Then I printed pictures of people that are dear to me, my friends and family, so I could see them regularly and keep them in my prayers. Finally I found some scripture printables on Pinterest that I printed and placed on the walls. I always make sure to have a candle, a notebook, a pen and flowers in that space.

Here’s how my prayer room turned out:

I can say that I love this space, it’s a place that is truly mine and where I’ve been able to get disciplined in my prayer life.

Do you have a room devoted to meditation or prayer in your home?
