We are preparing to move into our new studio!

In the meantime, we are running out of space! Today I’m sharing a simple and fun DIY to turn a dated Ikea Billy bookcase into a sophisticated storage piece.

You’ll Need:

-An old Billy bookcase (or any bookcase you don’t use)

Heavy duty cleaner

Chalk paint (pick a color of your choice)

-A large brush (yes, I recommend you use the special chalk paint brush)

Liquid leaf paint

-A spare piece of fabric large enough to cover the back of the bookcase, ex: 2′ X 5′

-A stapler or a a bunch of flat head pins

Here’s How

1. Remove the backing of your bookcase (simply remove the little nails)

42. Follow the instructions on the heavy duty cleaner to dilute the product

3. Clean the bookcase thoroughly

4. Apply a first coat of chalk paint on the bookcase

5. Let dry 4hrs

6. While the bookcase is drying, grab the fabric and staple it onto the backing of the bookcase (or pin it)

6

7. Apply a second coat of paint

8. Let dry 4 hrs

9. Apply liquid leaf paint on the apparent edges of the bookcase and every shelf

10. Re-install the backing of the bookcase

The best part of reusing furniture that is out of date is that it’s a little contribution towards recycling!
