People often ask me how I come up with inspiration for a room. It’s one of those things that comes easy to me but today I’d like to share my creative process. For this exercise we’ll be coming up for a concept for a living room.
1.Find an inspirational object
When I meet new clients, they don’t always have the words to express what they would like to see in their new room. This may happen to you too. My trick is to grab 1 object in the room you wouldn’t change and analyses it.
So my fictional client picked the throw below. It’s colorful , fun, soft, rustic, has a fun texture and it’s comforting. I try to pick other accessories that will bring out those elements.
2. Pick out the big furniture
Furniture is more expensive to replace regularly so I often go with a neutral base so that anyone can easily update the accessories as their needs and wants change.
When I think of comfort, I think about reading a book on the chaise section of a sectional like this one:
As extra seating I love the accent chair below which brings out a little of the rustic element with the walnut.
As you can see the sectional and chair are not the same design style. The Sectional is contemporary while the accent chair is more of a mid century modern twist. Don’t be afraid to mix styles.
As a coffee table I pick a wooden one to add warmth to the room.
I also pick a wooden side table but this time in a round shape.
When it comes to the rug, you can either go neutral or bring out a pop of color. My fictional clients love the blue in the throw so we pick a rug accordingly.
I could have chosen a more playful rug but this one brings formality to this living room with it’s traditional feel.
3.Choose accessories
Once all the Big pieces are selected, we choose accessories and curtains if necessary. We can have much more fun with those elements!
With the pillows I mix a little of everything! I found them all at Bouclair .
They are all under 25$, so it’s easy to switch them around when new seasons come. We have plenty of colors to choose from in our throw; red, orange, pink, yellow, light blue, beige.
And let there be light; this floor lamp goes with any design style!
This canvas brings all the colors together and can be a great conversation piece in a a living room!
No room is complete without a pouf!
For window treatment, simple roller shades will add value to your home.
Most people don’t think of plants as a decorative element but it is! And if you don’t have a green thumb, pick plants that are easy to take care of such as succulents. Hang them in the ceiling with these plant holders that are rough and rustic:
Pick your paint color last! It will be easier to match a paint color to your decor then vise versa; Trust me!
For this project I picked those three colors from Benjamin Moore. The one a client chooses will depend on the mood. The grey and blue is for a calm atmosphere while the Orange is for a warmth. If your living room is large, a darker color will make it feel cozy.
There you have it folks. we started with 1 object and now we have a fully decorated living room!
Easy Breezy!
