My hubby and I have been sharing a tiny home office for the past year and frankly, it’s been hard to manage.

Before my husband moved into my office, I was using the room as a crafting/sewing/ and reading room:

It wasn’t perfect but it was roomy and funcional for my needs.

BUT, hubby moved in and now it looks like this:

As you can see it’s a mess… I am even embarrassed to put this up on the web for everyone to see! What happened?

“Jack” and I both started working more from home. This room went from a leisure space to a work space for two. When we first decided to share this area, it was supposed to be a short term arrangement. We put whatever furniture we could into the room and started working! But then we had a baby, my sister moved into our basement, and we realized this will be a shared space for at least the next three years.  We obviously lack storage and we have to make it more appealing to work in. Hubby wants a space that is clean and minimalist. I want a space that will allow my creative juices to flow (organization always helps). We have already transformed our closet into an office storage but that doesn’t seem to be enough.

We also don’t want to invest too much as this will be a medium term arrangement (until we get the basement back). My desk (the one on the right) is definitely not working for me because it doesn’t have enough depth… it’s typically used for laptops.

I came up with two possible new layouts for our office:

layout 1

layout 2

Since we lack storage we think it would be good to add ready made kitchen cabinets on the wall (right).

Verdict?

We decided to go with option # 2 that allows more space to move around the office.  Particularly since I had forgotten that we sometimes use this room as a spare bedroom when guests come, so it’s important to have space for a mattress and to be able to move things around easily. He are some items we are eyeing mostly from Ikea and Target:

We went for clean lines in the furniture and accents of gold for me!

Stay tuned for the results!
